Opening the Mouth & Nose of a reborn

Most of the reborns I create have opened mouths and all of them have opened noses. To open a mouth I will slice along the line between both lips. I'll then sand both edges to be sure they aren't rough. Sometimes a doll will look better if the entire insides are removed. In a case like that, I will back the mouth with a dark felt (see below)so that the insides of the head cannot be seen. Mouths are opened basically for one purpose - to allow a baby to suck it's pacifier or binky. When sliced open, you cannot tell it has been cut. You may choose to have a magnetic pacifier for your baby. In this case, a magnet is glued inside the head behind the mouth. Then another magnet is glued onto the pacifier. This way, there is not need to cut into the vinyl.*Please note, however: These magnets are very powerful and anyone with a pacemaker or other device which could be affected should stay away from the baby. The baby should also never be placed near any electronic devices such as a tv, computer, etc.*

Every baby's lip paint is removed and a more natural color is given them. They are sealed for permanence.

The nose is opened for realism sake. I'll very carefully drill a hole into the nostril, making sure it is neither too big or small. After drilling, there are lots of jagged pieces of vinyl inside. These are removed by sanding and trimming with the exacto knife. If you would prefer to keep your babies nose intact, I will paint the insides a natural color instead.

This "SE" baby had a closed mouth. I sculpted it open and backed it with felt. Her nose is also opened and backed.

This baby has a magnetic pacifier and closed nostrils.
